Oireachtas Scrutiny of EU Business

The Lisbon Treaty has given national parliaments of the Member States an enhanced role in the European Union. This means the Houses of the Oireachtas have more influence and input over the policies and legislation formulated by the EU. A full explanation of these new powers is contained in the Government’s White Paper.

The Joint Committee on European Affairs (JCEA) works alongside the Joint Committee on European Scrutiny (JCES) in debating EU policies and legislation, in particular to assess their impact on Ireland. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minster of State for European Affairs appear regularly before the JCEA to explain the Government’s approach to issues on the EU agenda.

The Government is obliged to present an Annual Report on Developments in the EU to the Houses of the Oireachtas. These reports are available to the public and can be downloaded below.
