Ireland’s bilateral and multilateral political relations with Asia & Oceania

As part of the implementation of the Government’s Asia Strategy, the Department’s Political Division works to broaden and strengthen Ireland’s political relations with countries in Asia and Oceania. The Division also seeks to contribute to the strengthening of multilateral processes in the Asia region, in particular through participation in the ASEM (Asia- Europe meeting) process.

The Division monitors political developments in Asia and Oceania and manages bilateral relations, including through increased engagement with the region and ongoing implementation of the Government’s Asia Strategy.  It formulates Ireland’s policy approach towards the region on political issues, including on human rights.

At EU level, the Division, working with the Permanent Representation in Brussels, is responsible for the Irish input into the development of the EU’s relations with Asia, both bilaterally and through interaction with regional and inter-regional organisations such as ASEM, ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) and SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).

The Division works closely with other relevant Divisions, with Ireland’s Permanent Missions to the EU and UN, and with Embassies in the region, in particular in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Canberra, New Delhi and Tehran.
