International Organisations

Founded in 1949, the Council of Europe is the oldest intergovernmental organisation in Europe and was established to further cooperation between its member states on the basis of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Ireland is one of the ten founder members. The Council now comprises 47 States, including all 27 EU States.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is the primary instrument for early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation in Europe, Central Asia and North America. Ireland was a founder member in 1973 of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) which became the OSCE in 1994. The OSCE currently comprises 57 States, including all 27 EU States.
